GET INVOLVED

Young Leaders Group

Rob Moore's

Update: the students for this cohort of the Young Leaders Group have been selected and we are currently meeting. If you are interested in receiving emails with opportunities from me or participating in the Young Leaders Group in the future, email me at rob@robforlosgatos.com

This group is a personal project of mine and is not affiliated with the Town of Los Gatos or the Los Gatos Town Council.

Are you a student interested in discussing important topics, tackling community issues, learning from experts, and receiving mentorship? The Young Leaders Group meets every other week to engage in impactful discussions and learn from various speakers about meaningful topics. Participation in this group would be considered an internship or volunteer hours. Accordingly, I will write letters of recommendation for students who attend the majority of meetings. These meetings began in January and will be held through the end of the school year in June. The target age group is high school-aged students.

This group is for all students, even if you do not consider yourself a leader. When I was in high school, I was not very studious and often felt lost. If that sounds at all like you, you're welcome here! The goals of the Young Leaders Group are for members to build community, engage in challenging conversations, learn important life skills, do good work for the community, and obtain mentorship.

Student participants ultimately decide the topics covered by speakers. Examples of topics may include:

  • Does politics have to be so divisive?

  • The Future of AI - from the Exploration Director for NASA AI research labs

  • Introduction to activism, advocacy, community organizing, and mutual aid

  • What is masculinity? What is femininity?

  • Why is homelessness a housing problem? â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

  • How to find your passion and excel in what you do

  • Climate Science 101 and How to Save the Planet

  • How to Pick a College, or Decide What to Do Instead

  • What are third spaces, and where did they go?

  • Medicare for all - why do other countries have it but we don’t?

  • Limitations of the First Amendment, the Constitution, and censorship â€‹â€‹

Especially in light of the upcoming changes in our government, I want to create a space where young people can find community and work together to find ideas to support our friends and neighbors in difficult times.

There ended up being more than 150 students interested in joining the Young Leaders Group, and I wish I could have accepted them all. I’ll be providing more opportunities to all of the students who are interested in the future, so let me know if you or your student would like to be added to my “Youth Opportunities” email list.

Please reach out to me to join my email list or with any questions at rob@robforlosgatos.com or text at 408-637-1423
