Incoming Vice Mayor Rob Moore's

GET INVOLVED

Young Leaders Group

Starting January 2025

Are you a student interested in discussing important topics, tackling community issues, learning from experts, and receiving mentorship? Join our new discussion group and community space for students in the Los Gatos and San Jose area looking to make a difference!

The Young Leaders Group will meet every other week to engage in impactful discussions and learn from various speakers about meaningful topics. Participation in this group would be considered an internship or volunteer hours with the Vice Mayor of Los Gatos. Accordingly, I will write letters of recommendation for students who attend at least 6 meetings. These meetings will begin in January and will be held through the end of the school year. The target age group is high school and community college-aged students.

This group is for all students, even if you do not consider yourself a leader. When I was in high school, I was not very studious and often felt lost - so if that sounds at all like you, you're welcome here! The goals of the Young Leaders Group will be for members to build community, engage in challenging conversations, learn important life skills, do good work for the community, and obtain mentorship.

Many topics covered by speakers will ultimately be decided by student participants. Some initial topics may include:

  • "Does politics have to be so divisive?"

  • The Future of AI - from the Exploration Director for NASA AI research labs

  • Introduction to activism, advocacy, community organizing, and mutual aid

  • "What is masculinity? What is femininity?"

  • "Why is homelessness a housing problem?" â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

  • How to find your passion and excel in what you do

  • "Climate Science 101 and How to Save the Planet"

  • Introduction to bike maintenance

  • "How to Pick a College, or Decide What to do Instead"

We will also do fun activities like hikes, astronomy with a telescope, group dinners, and volunteering with nonprofits.

Especially in light of the upcoming changes in our government, I want to create a space where young people can find community and work together to find ideas to support our friends and neighbors in difficult times.
